HARRINGTON SCHOOL MATH MORNINGS
What number comes next: 0 … 1 … 1 … 2 … 3 … 5 … ? If ten ferocious monsters together can eat 5 villages per month, how many villages can a dozen monsters eat in a year? What number comes after 1011 … in binary? About how many hot dogs would it take to circle the earth's equator? If 5 days before the day after tomorrow is Monday, what day of the week was yesterday? What’s the angle between the hands of a clock at 2:30? If a@b=(b+b–a)–(a–b), how much larger is 9@8 than 7@5 ? On a magical island, everyone either always lies or always tells the truth. Two people on the island are standing together. One says “we’re both liars.”
Is his companion a liar?

General Information
Math Mornings are a parent-run weekly PTA enrichment program for Harrington School students in grades 3-5. Our focus is on strengthening problem-solving skills and helping children discover how powerful, exciting, diverse, and fun the field of mathematics can be. We aim to discuss material that will be new and challenging for most of the group, and also provide occasional opportunities for students to work on problems from past years’ regional mathematics competitions. We do not focus primarily on arithmetic or on reinforcing topics already covered at school. Past year’s topics have included estimation, sequences, logic, algebra, geometric constructions, the law of the lever, math-based magic, Roman numerals, binary numbers, Venn diagrams, probability, distance-rate-time problems, area and perimeter, “unplugged” computer science, and much more. Parents are always welcome, but never required, to attend with their children.

2016-17 Schedule
3rd Grade: Thursdays, 7:30-8:15 am, in the cafeteria 4th Grade: Wednesdays, 7:30-8:15 am, in the library 5th Grade: Mondays, 7:30-8:15 am, in the cafeteria Math Mornings will not meet when there is no school, when school is delayed due to weather, or on days that grade has an MCAS exam. For any other cancellations we will email families for whom we have contact information (fill out the form on the first day or email us your contact information!). If you arrive early, please wait with your children: no adult supervision is available before the program's start time, and children cannot be in the school unattended. To avoid spills and to protect children with life-threatening allergies, no food or drink is allowed at Math Mornings (this includes parents -- sorry!). |
Volunteer Opportunities
We need and welcome parent volunteers! Each grade has 1-2 lead instructors and several assistant instructors. The lead instructors teach most classes during the year, and are also responsible for parent communication and photocopying materials. Assistant instructors provide children with individual help on problem sets; help with distributing and collecting materials; and may also substitute teach occasionally when the lead instructor is unavailable. All Math Morning volunteers should have strong communication skills; be enthusiastic, patient, and nurturing; and be extremely comfortable with math through at least a middle school level (but it is not necessary to have a math degree or to work in a math-related profession). This year's lead instructor roles are currently filled, but we need assistant instructors in every grade. Contact us for more information. |
